Building A Better Me Review
Given that this is Dogwood's fifth album
in six years, one might expect that sort of prolific output
to yield a few clunkers. But the songs on Building a Better
Me --written mostly by guitarist Sean O'Donnell (with assistance
from drummer Russell Castillo) -- are pretty much fully formed
gems. There's a fair amount of the sort of angst and teeth-gnashing
one expects from punk. But most of O'Donnell and Castillo's
lyrics are uncommonly passionate and insightful. The opening "The
Good Times," an unblinking look at the effects of divorce,
is a stunner; the title track speaks perceptively of the
struggles involved in overcoming sin; and "Cheat Me" is
a caution against putting celebrities on pedestals, while "Mycro" is
a high-octane praise anthem.
