By Surprise Review
Joy Williams has really
matured musically since her self-titled album. Whereas
she only co-wrote two of the songs on "Joy Williams", she wrote or co-wrote
almost all the songs on "By Surprise", and it shows.
It may take a few listens to warm up to this CD, but it's
definitely worth it.
1. New Day - Throbbing with energy, this song focuses on
second chances and moving on.
2. I Wonder - A surprisingly touching song marveling over
the mystery of God's undying love.
3. Every Moment - this beautiful song is a wake-up call telling
us not to waste the time God has given us.
4. By Surprise - this title track has gotten a lot of attention,
and it's understandable. It's fun, hip and will have you
tapping your foot. The lyrics are really creative, and Joy
is at her best. (This song was featured on the WOW its 2004
album.)
5. Surrender - possibly the best song on the album. It's
deep, slightly melancholy and thought-provoking. Everyone
has can identify with having hidden something from God; with
a pop feel and great vocals, this song urges you to let it
go.
6. Desperate - A sad cry for the warmth of God's touch. It's
one of the slower songs on this album, but it does make for
some nice variety, and is genuinely beautiful.
7. Every Day - an upbeat song, "Every Day" reflects
the hecticness of modern-day living. "But in the midst
of all the lists to do," Joy sings, "I need some
help to change my point of view."
8. Wish - In this tender, moving song, Joy sings of love
for her Savior and wishing she could see Him face to face.
Though this song will never be a chart topper, it's probably
one of her personal best in its poigant sincerity.
9. Beautiful Somehow - this song takes a little warming up
to. It speaks of God's love for every person and contentment--there's
no need to feel dissatisfied with yourself if God loves you
the way you are. It's not her usual style, with a "twangy" feel
and confusing lyrics, but it is worth listening to, especially
if you struggle with self-image.
10. The Love of the Lord Endures - With just a piano for
background, Joy's voice soars over this endearing love song.
Encouraging and beautiful, it ties up the album with a reassuring
affirmation of God's love.
