Divine Discontent Review
Countless bands have suffered under record
label strife, be it legal hassles or creative differences.
No one knows it better than Sixpence None The Richer. They
were poised for the next major level of success after their
third, self-titled CD met critical success and contributions
to soundtracks drew serious public attention. That was when
the trouble began. But the struggle was worth the extended
wait, as their new disc, Divine Discontent, realizes their
true potential.
Honing on their fine pop sensibility,
leaders Leigh Nash (vocals) and Matt Slocum (multi-instrumentalist)
have crafted a lush and lovely disc with their band, filled
with wonder and melancholy. From the lilting opener "Breathe Your
Name," through the somber, yet infectious "Down
and Out of Time," the disc maintains a sense of guarded
optimism, as if the singer of these songs wanted to believe
in hope even if logic suggested otherwise. One can hear it
even in the keenly atmospheric cover of Crowded House's "Don't
Dream It's Over" and the blissful closer "A Million
Parachutes." Considering the forecast, it's a disc that
arrives just in time to help get you through a winter ripe
with discontent.
