The Experience Review

Recorded live in Washington, D.C., The Experience delivers a breathtaking dose of Yolanda Adams's sensational voice and praise-leading charisma. Featuring the classic song "I Believe I Can Fly," performed as a duet with Gerald Levert, most of these tracks are augmented renditions of songs from the Grammy Award-winning Mountain High...Valley Low. The passion of a gospel-style celebration puts this record into a category all its own as Adams hovers in sweet praise, eggs the audience on to shouts of joy, and sings her testimony with a grit that has been reserved for the most fiery preachers. Backed by an orchestra, choir, and punchy rhythm section, these songs weave Adams's soul-gospel grooves with dramatic climaxes and pared-down interludes. The combination of these various dynamics with songs like the Latin-influenced "Ye of Little Faith," the smooth gospel hit "Open My Heart," and the hymn-like "That Name" paints a holistic picture of Adams's vision and artistry that is captured on no other recording.
